CANACONA
Despite the ongoing heavy rains, tree-felling incidents that damage homes and power lines have become a common problem, keeping Fire Services and Electricity teams in Canacona on high alert.
On Friday morning, a coconut tree fell on Roman Dias’s house in Maxem, Loliem-Polem village. Fire services quickly arrived, removed the tree, and saved nearly Rs 100,000 worth of damage. The house still suffered over Rs 35,000 in damage.
Later, a jackfruit tree fell on Brijesh Prabhu’s house near the Loliem-Polem Panchayat office, causing around Rs 5,000 in damage. Fire personnel arrived in time to prevent losses of over Rs 50,000. They also cleared a coconut tree from the road near Government Primary School, Loliem later in the evening.
In Kindlem, a cashew tree fell on Harshad Dessai’s house, but there were no significant losses. Another coconut tree that fell on the road near Oxygen Resorts in Palolem was cleared by fire services.
Earlier that morning, fire services went to Agonda to clear a jungle tree that had fallen on the overhead electricity line on Guraval Road, causing a power outage. The Electricity team later repaired the damaged pole and restored power, with total losses of over Rs 100,000. Both transformers were fixed during the day. The electricity team also replaced two poles damaged by falling trees at Manem-Khotigao.
Fire services also responded to clear fallen cashew trees at Dumane and Karmalghat (NH66) and removed jungle trees near Partagall Math.
At Char-Rasta, a large teak tree fell on Babuso Parit’s garage. Fire services managed to save over Rs 25,000 worth of potential damage, although the owner still lost Rs 5,000.
Fire services also cleared a jungle tree from Pradnya Gaonkar’s house at Gaondongrim, where she suffered a Rs 25,000 loss but saved Rs 50,000.
At the time of writing this report, fire personnel were responding to a coconut tree that had fallen on the road at Tahrir-Rajbagh late Friday evening.
