As a result, garbage piles are seen at different places on the beach much to the anger of shack owners at Bogmalo beach.
According to shack owners at Bogmalo beach, the sub contractor involved in cleaning the beach has failed to clear the garbage dumped in front of the shacks.
“The garbage mount gives an ugly scene and has lead to breeding of house flies and mosquitoes, which irk the customers,” said a shack owner pointing to the garbage outside his shack.
“The sub contractor is not seen at the beach for last one week and the workers refuse to clean the beach stating that their salaries are not being paid,” added the shack owner.
When contacted, Bogmalo Sarpanch Laximan Kavlekar said the contractor had assured him to clear the garbage and look into the matter. Kavlekar informed that the main contractors failed to clear the bills of the sub contractor for the last four months, due to which the sub contractor did not pay salaries of the labourers.
“As the labourers did not get their salaries, they stopped cleaning the beach and shift the dumped garbage,” said Kavlekar.
When asked who are the main contractors, Kavlekar said Goa Tourism Development Corporation allotted the beach cleaning contract to two contractors, who have appointed sub contractors to clean the beach.
When sought to know who the Bogmalo sub contractor was, Kavlekar said one Murali is involved in cleaning Bogmalo and Baina beaches and he has about 12 labourers.
Efforts to contact sub contractor Murali on his mobile phone proved futile, as it was found out of range.
