Hope brightens for clearance of Sonsodo dump

MARGAO
There’s finally good news in store over the clearance of the Sonsodo legacy dump. Transportation of the dry and plastic waste from the site to Karnataka has resumed again.

The planned remediation work was hampered due to the delay in transporting the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) material to the cement factories to the neighbouring State.

Waste transportation from Sonsodo to the cement factories in Karnataka has only raised hopes that the ongoing remediation work will begin full-swing in the coming days.

It was estimated that around 40,000 cubic meters of RDF were lying at the Sonsodo site after the remediation, hampering the ongoing work.

Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Managing Director Levinson Martins said that the cement factories have once again started accepting RDF and plastic waste from the state over the last few days. This, he said, would help in getting rid of the RDF from Sonsodo and other parts of the state.

“Around 40,000 cubic meters of RDF had piled up at Sonsodo after the bio-remediation. The pile-up was hampering the remediation work as the RDF was stored at the Sonsodo site,” he said.

Martins pointed out that around six trucks have left the Sonsodo site for the cement factories in Karnataka. “We have accorded top priority to the transportation of the RDF from Sonsodo to the cement factories. If we succeed, we will be able to go in full steam and complete the remediation work as per schedule,” he said.

Asked whether the Sonsodo legacy dump will be completely remediated before the onset of monsoons, Martins said the Corporation will try and complete the work as early as possible.

The High Court has been monitoring the remediation work of the Sonsodo legacy dump after the NGO, Citizens for Sonsodo, filed a writ petition in the court seeking relief in terms of remediation of the Sonsodo legacy dump.
