Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Rajesh Patnekar on Tuesday announced the adjournment of the ongoing Assembly session till July 19 citing the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which came into force following the announcement by the State Election Commission of
the elections to five municipalities.
The Assembly was adjourned after passing vote on account for five months. All the pending business will now be taken up during the monsoon session of the Assembly.
The ongoing budget session commenced on March 24 and was scheduled to conclude on April 16. The budget, which was tabled on March 24, has yet to be passed by the House.
The government announced the decision which was taken in the Business Advisory Committee meeting held on Tuesday afternoon.
After the vote on account was tabled, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward Party leader and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai sought to point out that the Opposition had moved the demand as early as on March 17 that the session be curtailed in view of the possible enforcement of MCC following the order of the Supreme Court. However, they accused Chief Minister Pramod Sawant of turning a blind eye to their demand.
Speaking before the House, Chief Minister Sawant stated, “Since the code of conduct for the municipal elections has begun, it was decided in BAC to curtail the Assembly session and begin on July 19.”
