Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari said the Centre has invested almost Rs 18,000 crore on various projects in the State and vowed to complete the iconic bridge across River Zuari before the end of its current term.

“The iconic bridge on River Zuari will be built at a cost of around Rs 2,500 crore. I promise that in 2018, before we complete our five year term, we will inaugurate the bridge,” Gadkari said.

“The bridge will have two towers. There will be car parking on both sides of the towers. Besides, there will be hotels, restaurants, parking plaza, landscaping, etc,” he added.

The union minister was addressing a public meeting in Mapusa in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister, Francis D’Souza and others.

He said tourists from all over the world come to Goa for its beaches but now they will have another attraction by way of the iconic bridge.

Gadkari further said his ministry has recently passed tenders for widening of National Highway from Patradevi to Carrasvaddo and Carrasvaddo to Panaji.

“In 50 years, Goa had only 260 kms of National Highway, whereas after our government came to power the length has been increased to 330 kms,” he said.

He said the BJP-led government has carried out a lot of development in the State and appealed to the gathering to give mandate to BJP to carry the good work forward.

“Goa’s development happened only because we had a stable government in the State. The future progress of the State hinges on the result of this assembly election,” he said.

Slamming the opposition, he said Congress raised the bogey of communalism only during the elections to instill fear in the minorities.

“Congress creates fear in the minds of the minorities only during the election,” he said and exhorted the gathering to make Goa “Congress mukt.”

He said some politicians were dreaming of becoming chief ministers of Goa and called them opportunists.
