Chaturthi fiesta
begins today
With the onset of the month of Bhadrapad, Goa is all set to celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi from today.
While some will pay obeisance to the idol of Lord Ganesha for a mere day and half, numerous others will celebrate the festival for five, seven, eleven and twenty one days. It’s a Ganesh bonanza. The Government of Goa has released payments to the tune of ₹264.23 crore to various government departments for payment of pending bills, many of them for several months.
The biggest beneficiary is the Public Works Department, which has received ₹101 crore of the government’s largesse, and will be used to clear pending bills of the contractors.
The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation which is also struggling to complete projects on account of fund constraints has been given ₹45 crore.
More importantly, however, farmers who have been waiting for months on end will receive their subsidies, support price, and sanctioning of funds under various schemes that they have applied for with the government releasing ₹16.82 crore for the departments of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry.
Mining dependents too have reason to cheer with three monthly installments being released to the truck owners who have availed of benefits under the scheme of monthly government grants. Those who have also applied for the unemployment allowance will also receive their money with ₹4.82 crore being sent out for the same.
Government school teachers have also received pending dues including dearness allowances, new teachers who haven’t received their first salary yet, and various other pending dues. Teachers on contract too will benefit with the government releasing ₹6.18 crore to the education department.
Government aided schools too have reason to celebrate with the government releasing ₹13.33 crore towards non-salary maintenance grants.
The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) has also received ₹15 crore while panchayats have got ₹5.64 crore as various grants while Municipalities have received ₹12 crore as repayment to Octroi.
From April till date the government has spent ₹233 crore on the GSIDC, ₹263 crore on the PWD, ₹85.55 crore on the electricity department, ₹61 crore on the water resources department, ₹27 crore on the Tourism department and ₹20 crore on the Sewerage Corporation.
During the same period the government spent as much as ₹593 crore only on repayment of past loans.
In April the government spent ₹60.42 crore, ₹111.18 in May, ₹101.05 in June, ₹68.53 in July ₹127 crore in August and ₹85 crore in September till date on loan repayment. This financial year the government has borrowed ₹700 crore from a total of allowed borrowing of ₹1920 crore allowed by the RBI.
