MARGAO: Late in the evening on Saturday, the Margao police nabbed five bookies, allegedly involved in accepting bets on the IndiaÂPakistan cricket tie in the ongoing Asia Cup tournament.
Acting on a tip off, a police team comprising of PSI Vishwajit Chodankar and PSI Melito Fernandes raided a hotel at MungulÂMargao and nabbed four persons and recovered cash Rs 13,88, besides 20 cell phones and a laptop.
PSI Chodankar informed that while two of the accused are hailing from Kholapur, the remaining accused are natives of Hubli and Nashik.
He said the five accused, three of whom were residing at Borda and Chandrawado, were accepting bets of the cricket match promising fixed money. “We had information that the five persons are operating from the hotel at Mungul. They had come down to Goa around three days ago to execute their plan”, PSI Chodankar added.
Police provided the names of the accused as Darshan Sugnarti, resident of Borda, but native of Hubli, Mohammed Khan, resident of Chandrawado, but native of Jharkand, Pahila Octwari, native of Kholapur, but presently residing at Mungul, Chaten Sugnarti, resident of Borda but native of
Nashik and Shankar Batred, native of Kholapur, but residing at Mungul.
The police are conducting further investigations.
