It's official! monsoon finally arrives in Goa

After a prolonged halt just South of Goa, the South West Monsoon finally advanced over Goa and parts of the Konkan coast even as the State witnessed only sporadic showers in isolated places on Sunday.
“The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, entire Goa, some parts of south Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, East Madhya Pradesh, southeast Uttar Pradesh, some more parts of Vidarbha, Bihar and remaining parts of North Interior Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand,” the India weather office said.
The Northern Limit of Monsoon which stood at Karwar from June 10-18 has now passed through Harnai (Maharashtra coast), Solapur, Nanded, Yavatmal, Chhindwara, Sidhi, Patna and Raxaul, from west to northeast of the country.
“Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, Konkan, Marathwada, Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh and Bihar etc during next 48 hours,” the weather office said.
From June 10 to June 18, the western front of the south west monsoon remained at Karwar while during the same period the eastern front surged covering the entire west central, north east and north west Bay of Bengal as well as the entire North East India, Bangladesh, West Bengal, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Meanwhile, the Goa weather office has predicted moderate to very heavy rainfall “at most places in Goa over the next five days.”
Goa witnessed only light rain on Saturday and Sunday with the maximum rainfall being recorded at Margao of 50mm while Canacona, Dabolim and Mormugao all recorded 30mm each and Panaji recorded 20mm.
A far cry from the 160 mm of ‘pre monsoon’ showers Sankhali witnessed on June 15 while other towns like Ponda witnessed 130 mm of rainfall. Two days prior on June 13, Quepem witnessed 150 mm, Sanguem 120mm while Panaji itself witnessed 110 mm of ‘pre-monsoon’ rainfall.
So far the State has witnessed 501.6 mm of rainfall since June 01, which is 6.5mm below normal. The monsoon is expected to pick up pace over the coming days.
