Jagruth Canconcars oppose religious structure in Shristhal

CANACONA
The Jagruth Canconcars have objected to a construction of a religious structure in Dhupemoll-Shristhal and have decided to convene an inter-religious meet to discuss the issue.

Members of the Jagruth Canconcars obtained details of an electricity connection issued in the name of a local resident in Shristhal village and on Saturday, met Shristhal Sarpanch Pandurang alias Datta Gaonkar and the panchayat secretary, in a bid to resolve the issue peacefully and amicably.

“The community already has a place of worship in Nagorcem and attempts to set up other religious structures in residential areas is unwarranted,” said Samrat Bhagat of the Jagruth Canconcars.

“Some people from Hubli and elsewhere have purchased land and trying to construct a religious structure and this will only disturb the communal harmony in Canacona, which has prevailed through the ages.”

“In Canacona, there are churches dedicated to different saints, temples dedicated to gods and goddesses in different parts of Canacona and even a masjid near Palolem. People have been living across Canacona in harmony and love,” said Bhagat.

During the meeting, the sarpanch and panchayat secretary were warned that the situation could go out of hand if no action is taken to stop the construction activity.

During the meeting, the sarpanch is reported to have agreed to initiate action to stop the construction activity being opposed by Jagruth Canconcars.

The Jagruth Canconcars further decided to hold an inter-religious meet and said it would invite representatives of big and small devasthan committees members, churches and the masjid at Tembewada.

“The date, time and place will, accordingly, be informed,” said the Jagruth Canconcars in a statement.
