The strike call given by the Mumbai-based apex body of jewellers - the All India Jewellers Association and Gems and Jewellery Federation (GJF) - supported by the Goa Gold Dealers Association in Goa - will continue.

Speaking to THE GOAN, the president of the association, Prameet Raikar, said the apex body has conveyed the decision to continue with the strike. “We will not open our establishments on Tuesday,” Raikar informed.

He said the strike will continue until their demand for withdrawal of the Excise Duty imposed on the manufacturing sector in the recent budget is rolled back by the central government. It has been the contention of the jewellers that the Exicse Duty will result in the hike in the jewellery products at the retail end as a result of this duty, working to the detriment of the consumer and consequently their business.
