CANACONA
The State government may have banned fish imports into the State for 15 days, but it did not stop fisherfolk across the border in Karwar from entering Canacona taluka with baskets of fish on Thursday.
According to sources, over a dozen Karwari fisherwomen are known to make daily trips from Karwar to Canacona, carrying fish baskets on buses from Majali-Karwar.
However, word of the fish ban quickly spread among the fisherwomen in Karwar and they feared that they could be stopped at the Polem border.
They delayed their arrival to Canacona, with most reaching different parts of the taluka as late as 11 am on Thursday.
The Karwari fisherwomen were seen stationed at the fish markets at Mashem (Loliem), Voddamoll (Shristhal), Xeller (near Chaudi) and Char-Rasta in Canacona.
Aware that fish rates had surged on account of the fish import ban, the Karwari fisherfolk were quick to sell fish at double the rate they had sold on Wednesday.
However, that did not deter the Karwari fisherwomen and their local counterparts from doing brisk business, as most people were willing to buy the fish irrespective of the quoted prices, since the fish sold by local and Karwari fisherwomen were fresh and not frozen.
