PERNEM

Ramakant Khalap, chairman of the Mandrem Vikas Parishad's Mandrem college, has vowed to run Mandrem college even though the BJP government has stopped grants, hinting that he could take the matter to court.

“I am ready to sacrifice my life, but I will not stop the college,” said Khalap at a press conference on Sunday.

“Parents, students, teachers, the managing committee, NGOs and people will come forward and give a befitting answer to the government's autocratic decision. There is an option of going to court,” he said.

He clarified that the Mandrem college had not received any communication from Goa University regarding first year admissions. “But we have informed the university about our admissions,” said Khalap.

“The Goa University is an autonomous body and the government cannot interfere in it. The University's duty is to ascertain if the college has infrastructure and enough number of students. Once permission has been given, the university cannot withdraw it simply because of the government,” Khalap said.

“Goa University should rethink its decision, otherwise we will be forced to go to court,” Khalap warned.

He informed media persons that a door-to-door campaign would be initiated from March 1 to 12 in Pernem taluka, to give people first-hand information on the Mandrem College issue.
