In a bid to underscore the crucial need for safeguarding the Mhadei river, Congress’ North Goa Lok Sabha candidate Ramakant Khalap said he had shown his willingness to champion Goa’s case in the water dispute matter pro bono.
However, Khalap revealed that despite offering his legal expertise to then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to represent Goa’s interests in the Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal, Supreme Court, and High Court, there was no response from the State government.
“I had offered to lead Goa’s case pro bono in the Mhadei issue. I had put up this proposal before then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to allow me to fight Goa’s defence. However, there was no response from the then government,” Khalap said.
Expressing concern over Karnataka’s alleged encroachment on Goa’s water resources, Khalap warned against the potential ramifications if other rivers flowing from the Western Ghats met a similar fate.
“What will happen if these rivers meet a similar fate?” he queried, stressing the urgency of addressing the broader issue of river conservation.
Asserting his confidence in the upcoming election for the North Goa seat, Khalap cited his extensive experience as a lawyer, educator, social worker, former MLA, minister, opposition leader, and union minister.
He highlighted his track record of service, particularly during his 18-month tenure as a Member of Parliament in Delhi in 1996, which he claims has earned recognition from constituents for his proactive approach to governance.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Khalap expressed optimism about securing victory with a substantial margin, citing positive feedback from constituents across all 20 constituencies in North Goa.
“This election won’t be tough for me judging from the feedback that I have got from the 20 constituencies. However, it won’t be easy too. But I am confident of winning by a margin of 50,000 votes,” he affirmed, underlining his confidence in his electoral prospects.
