PANAJI: The Goa University Academic Council, which met on Friday decided to ask Ramakant Khalap’s Mandre College not to begin admissions for its first year from the next academic year, unless it obtains an NOC from the State government, sources have said.
The Academic Council, which will continue its meeting on Monday, also agreed to adopt the choice based credit system for colleges from the next academic year.
“A decision has been taken by the Academic Council to ask the college management not to take admissions for the first year unless there is an NOC from the government. The classes for the second year and third year can go on,” the source said.
Former Mandrem MLA Ramakant Khalap has been crying hoarse about the government’s decision to deny the college grants, which he said is completely unfair to the college and the students from the area.
In another significant decision, the Academic Council of the Goa University has decided to adopt the choice based credit system, which will give students more flexibility to complete their degrees.
University Grants Commission has come up with the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) programme in which the students have a choice to choose from the prescribed courses, which are referred as core, elective or minor or soft skill courses and they can learn at their own pace and the entire assessment is graded-based on a credit system.
The assessment is done semester wise. A student progresses on the basis of the courses taken rather than time like three years for science, arts, commerce or four years for engineering etc. Each semester will have 15“18 weeks of academic work which is equal to 90 teaching days. There is flexibility in creating the curriculum and assigning credits based on the course content and hours of teaching.
The meeting of the Academic Council will continue on Monday as the agenda of the meeting isn’t complete.
