The feast of Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel Kurdi was celebrated in the last week of January, but as the area is submerged under water for rest of the year except summer, the feast is celebrated in May.
On Sunday, Fr Mathew Fernandes along with other priests concelebrated the feast mass and prayed for welfare of the people of Kurdi, who after the submersion of the village under water were rehabilitated and settled elsewhere.
Inacio Rodrigues, a resident of Kurdi and a parishioner, said that some years ago, an old school was situated at the place where the chapel exists. “Many people, who were settlers of Curdi village, studied in this school, where the parish priest was teaching. Presently, many are doing well in their lives and are in good positions,” said Rodrigues.
Another resident, Inacio PX Rodriguez, said there are many good unforgettable memories associated with the Kurdi village. “We were born here, there are many monuments which are of much significance and of value to us,” he added.
When asked why people rush to Kurdi in their cars and buses, Joseph Cardozo, a local from Kurdi, replied that the village was submerged during construction of Selaulim dam and the old houses and other Portuguese-era landmarks along with some religious places like a Shiva temple, mosque and the chapel also went
under water.
“That’s the reason, we only get a chance to visit the places in summer season and revive our old golden memories,”
he added.
