Lathi-charge on fishermen: 50 depose before probe panel
The Magisterial inquiry conducted by inquiry officer, South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik, has examined around 50 persons in connection with the lathi-charge on traditional fishermen in Panaji last month, even as the government has granted a month s extension for the panel to complete the probe. Of the 60 persons who had expressed their willingness to depose before the inquiry panel headed by Swapnil Naik, around 50 persons are believed to have deposed before the inquiry officer till date.

The panel will now seek documents and other reports from the Fisheries department as well as the police as part of the probe. The district collector, Swapnil Naik told The Goan that though the government had initially set a time-frame of one-month to complete the inquiry, I had asked for an extension of another month, which stands granted by the government. Replying to a question, Swapnil exuded confidence of capping the probe at the earliest and submit the report to the government.
The Bombay High Court at Goa dismissed a review petition filed by one Ashok Shirsat and two others (all shopkeepers on the premises) against an earlier order by the High Court directing the administration to stop the unauthorised occupation of the Serula Comunidade land and asked it to restore the property to its original state.
