Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo warned action against locals who have rented premises to migrants without providing proper sewerage and toilet facilities.
“If people want to rent out their premises to migrants then they should ensure proper toilet and bathroom facilities for them. Proper arrangement of septic and soak pit facilities should be made by the owners,” Lobo said.
“If you do not provide them with required basic facilities like toilets then we will demolish the rooms/sheds constructed by the locals,” he warned.
He said people should not depend only on the authorities to do the cleaning but every person should contribute to keep his surroundings clean.
The Waste Management Minister said many locals in the coastal belt have constructed a basic shed and let them out to migrants.
He said these owners have not provided them with toilet facilities which force them to go in the open and mess the place.
Candolim Health Officer, Dr Roshan Nazareth, informed that several rented premises in Calangute did not have toilet facilities while some hotels and guesthouses released their sewage into open drains posing a serious health hazard to the people living in the area. He said such unhygienic condition was a fertile ground for fostering of bacteria and spread of diseases.
He further disclosed that Candolim Primary Health Centre will soon inspect hotels and guesthouses that release sewage in the open.
