Locals said the dangerous excavated pits have been left unattended despite earlier assurances, reportedly by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, that they would be filled within a week. They said several months have passed without any action from the authorities.
Residents expressed serious concern for the safety of children and livestock, saying the open pits have become a major hazard. The risk has increased further with the upcoming Ganesh immersion festivities, when more people are expected to visit the area.
They also alleged that rainwater collecting in the pits has created breeding grounds for mosquitoes, raising fears of mosquito-borne diseases in the locality. Locals further accused the contractor of negligence for not placing barricades or warning signs around the excavated sites. Citing the danger, they have filed a formal complaint with the local police, seeking urgent action.
The residents have urged the government and the WRD to prioritise public safety by immediately filling the pits and addressing their concerns before taking up any further work.
