VASCO
A group of locals from Baina have demanded strict action against vendors selling fish and vegetables at different locations in their area of Vasco and against scrapyards in the area for keeping their waste material on the road.
The aggrieved locals on Monday submitted a memorandum to Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes and PI Nolasco Raposo. They also submitted the memorandum to Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and Mormugao MLA Milind Naik.
The memorandum, signed by 500 residents from Baina, highlighted the encroachments on the road from ‘C' building to Baina Recreational Club.
The residents of Baina, Sasmolem, Katem-Baina and surrounding areas complained that there are encroachments on the road, which is the busiest road in Baina.
The memorandum stated that there are shops and kiosks on both sides of the road and encroaching on the road by keeping their material and benches/chairs outside.
The residents further stated that scrapyards in the area are keeping their waste material on the road and the vehicles that are not in working condition are parked by the roadside. "Illegal vendors and carts are also selling fruits and other material by the roadside," stated the memorandum.
"This has resulted in hardships to the common citizens staying in the areas and especially the senior citizens, women and children. There are four schools nearby and it has become a tough time for the school children to cross the road. It has also become difficult to ride a two wheeler freely on this road," said a resident, Shyamsundar Nayak.
BJP spokesperson, Jayant Jadhav told reporters that the illegal vendors were not listening to the residents, who had requested them to sit in the Baina fish market.
"They are not paying fees and dirty the place. They are causing congestion. We had requested them to move back to market and they refused and challenge us back. Hence, we were forced to submit this memorandum," said Jadhav.
MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said action would be immediately initiated and the council would clear the vendors.
Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said he would make sure no illegal vendors are found selling fish besides the designated fish market and that, the council decided not to encourage illegal vendors in any part of Vasco.
