Annoyed over the decision to shorten the route of the Ponda Shigmotsav float parade on March 24, about 15 citizens representing 'Citizens of Ponda' have requested the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) to maintain the traditional route.
The Shigmotsav committee has planned to commence the float parade from civil court and conclude it at PMC garden, which is about 500 metres in distance. The stage for the prize distribution will be erected at Aguair ground at Tisk.
The short distance route up to PMC garden was decided by Shigmotsav committee to avoid obstruction to the Maundy Thursday prayer service at Mount Carmel Church near the police station.
The citizens on Wednesday met PMC vice-chairperson, who is also the secretary of Shigmotsav committee, and brought to his notice that people will be deprived of Shigmotsav glimpses due to the shortened route of the Ponda Shigmotsav float parade from civil court to Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) garden. They also submitted a memorandum in this regard.
“The route selected by the Shigmotsav committee is very short. We have requested to maintain the traditional route, wherein the main stage used to be erected at the bus stand, with the starting point at Tisk-Ponda,” former councillor Adv Vandana Jog told The Goan.
PMC councillor Shivanand Sawant has also criticized the decision of Shigmotsav committee, and said tht inconvenience will be caused to the people due to the short route.
“About 40,000 people witness the Shigmotsav. Where will they stand along the short distance route?” asked Sawant.
