Days after a 54-year-old man from New Vaddem was killed in a mishap near the MES College Junction at Sancoale, locals demanded an overbridge, a service road and CCTV cameras on traffic signals to prevent further mishaps in the area.Speaking to reporters, former Sancoale Sarpanch Sharan Meti said vehicles had been parked haphazardly all along the highway while some other areas near the roadsides had been encroached upon for garages and private parking areas.
"Besides this, there is no traffic discipline and many vehicle drivers jump signals. Some vehicles speed along the highway and many proceed in the wrong direction. Authorities must build an overbridge here and must also look into offering a service road along the highway for residents of this area as per NHAI rules," said Meti.
Another social worker Ismail Shaikh said there must be a circle and a traffic island at the MES college crossroads.
"Many heavy vehicles also move along internal roads and they must be stopped. There are vehicles speeding in the area and authorities must have traffic police deployed at this junction during peak hours.”
“The traffic police must also penalise buses that move haphazardly and must act against containers and heavy cranes parked by the roadsides," said Shaikh.
Another resident Baban Zore said CCTVs should be installed on traffic signals and also along various locations on the highway to act on violators.
"There is no other options besides having CCTV cameras and heavy fines for people jumping signals. We have seen many times that speeding trucks jump signals at Dabolim and MES College Junction and pose great danger to pedestrians and motorists.”
“We have seen many accidents in the area and we appeal to authorities to install cameras which are linked directly to the RTO," said Zore.
