PORVORIM
A group of locals led by Congress leader Adv Shankar Phadte filed a police complaint stating that religious sentiments of the Hindu community were hurt by some migrant workers by staging a Ganesh Visarjan procession on the third day of Chaturthi at BB Borkar Road in Porvorim.
In their complaint to Porvorim police, they stated that over 100 workers were dancing on the road in public view with beer bottles in their hands during the procession, which also violated Covid-19 protocols imposed by the government.
Later speaking to reporters, Adv Phadte said religious sentiments of the Hindus were not only hurt, but such acts had brought disrepute to Goa.
“Goan identity needs to be defined by legislation defining Person of Goan Origin. A person simply born prior to Goa’s Liberation cannot be of Goan origin. A person of Goan origin should be one who establish at least three generations in Goa.”
“Goan culture is a distinct homogeneous culture and hence, the identity of Goans need to be protected,” he said.
