SANGUEM
Residents have raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Uguem bridge, warning that the neglected structure could pose a major safety risk to commuters if repairs are not carried out immediately.
Located around 500 metres from the Uguem Panchayat office, the bridge serves as a key road link connecting several villages in Sanguem taluka with Sanguem town.
Residents claim that the bridge has been in a poor condition for a long time, with a large crack developing on the structure and side railings remaining unrepaired.
Local resident Anthony Colaco said the bridge has suffered damage underneath, while heavy vehicles, including loaded trucks, continue to use it daily, putting additional pressure on the weakened structure.
“The bridge is in a very dangerous condition. Heavy vehicles continue to ply on this road despite the visible damage. The issue has been brought to the notice of the Panchayat and the concerned authorities, but no concrete action has been taken,” Colaco said.
He added that the damaged safety barriers have not been restored for several years, highlighting the continued neglect of the important infrastructure.
Colaco urged the Public Works Department (PWD) and the government to conduct an immediate inspection and carry out necessary repairs before the situation worsens.
Residents have appealed to the authorities to act urgently, warning that any further delay could put the lives of hundreds of daily
commuters at risk.
