Hazard a guess what’s delaying the renovation and beautification of the historic Lohia Maidan, from where the great nationalist Dr Ram Manohar Lohia had given a clarion call to Goans to put an end to the Portuguese regime?
While the Lohia Maidan has been craving for attention in recent times, a proposal to renovate and
beautify the maidan, befitting the historic place, is pending with the government for want of sanction of funds to the tune of Rs 3.20 crore.
The proposal was mooted a couple of months during the tenure of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, but execution of the project has been kept on hold for want of the financial
sanction.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, who had mooted the Lohia Maidan beautification project during his stint in the BJP-led coalition government has warned the government not to play with the sentiments of the Goan people.
“No Goan will ever accept the argument that the renovation and beautification of the project could not take shape for want of funds,” he said while virtually issuing a warning that the people of Goa will resort to some mode of protest if the government does not give the financial sanction to the beautification project by
December 19 on Goa Liberation Day.
“The governor of the state recently made a reference to Ram Manohar Lohia. Lohia Maidan is a symbol of democratic thought and that’s the reason why the proposal was moved to beautify the Lohia Maidan,” he said.
