Lokayukta sworn in; expresses optimism

Governor of Goa Mridula Sinha administered oath of office to Justice PK Misra, retired Chief Justice of the Patna High Court as the state’s Lokayukta on Thursday in a simple ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan.

PANAJI:

Speaking to media persons after being administered the oath, Justice Misra expressed optimism that he will be an effective ombudsman.

“I have to go through the State specific Goa Lokayukta Act. I am given to understand that it is only a recommended body and it is for the competent authorities to take action. We will see what can be done,” Misra said.

Speaking on the issue of corruption, Misra said that corruption is as old as human civilisation itself and would only reduce if there is ‘self examination’ and internal change’ in society.

“Change must come from within if one is to eradicate corruption,” Misra said.

Misra, who walked in a neat Nehru suit, was administered the oath of office at around 10:30 in the presence of the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, PWD Minister, Tourism Minister, as well as several MLAs, heads of department secretaries and other officials. He was accompanied by his wife as well as several guests.

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar promised to have the new premises of the Lokayukta being set up at the Old GMC Complex at Ribandar within one month.

“I have asked the PWD which is doing the work to speed it up. It should be ready within four weeks,” Parsekar said. “I have asked the Lokayukta to ask if he needs additional staff or any other facilities and they will be provided to him to ensure a proper functioning of the Lokayukta,” Parsekar said.
