LoP slams govt over failure to notify staff selection commission

MARGAO

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Tuesday said failure to mention the recruitment process in Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting has exposed that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is not in a position to keep up with his commitment.

He recalled that the Goan youth was promised by the Chief Minister on November 8, 2022, that all government recruitment shall be done through Staff Selection Commission from January 2023. “Today we are in February 2023. There was no mention about the recruitment process in today’s (Tuesday) Cabinet meeting,” Yuri said.

Demanding to know why the BJP government is reluctant to issue the Notification to bring all the government recruitment under the Staff Selection Commission, Yuri said it is loud and clear that the government wants to continue with the corrupt practices and sell the jobs.

“NITI Ayog headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has exposed in its report that the unemployment rate in Goa is the highest in the country. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) in its latest report has stated that the unemployment rate in January 2023 is 16 per cent which is double the National Average. The government appears clueless about generating employment opportunities and providing jobs to the youths," Yuri stated.

He added: “The information provided to me in the reply to my Legislative Assembly Question states that 21,780 youths registered for the much-hyped Mega Job Fair held on November 8 and 9, 2022. Ironically only 576 were provided with job opportunities in the private sector. Surprisingly, the reply mentions that the government has not maintained any data pertaining to age, qualification, salary paid, date of joining, current status and whether the person recruited continues in the service or is removed by the employer.”

In the information provided to another LAQ, Yuri said the government has stated that out of 1,16,379 unemployed youths registered with the Employment Exchange, only 115 were provided jobs on a permanent basis and 1,749 were recruited on a contract basis in various government departments.

The information also reveals the Model Career Centre under Regional Employment Exchange only creates awareness and orientation and does not give any assurance of employment to the youths, he added.

Saying it is high time that the government puts its priorities in place and comes out with an action plan to address the unemployment issue in the State, the Leader of Opposition urged the Chief Minister to read the Congress Election Manifesto and implement the same, which will help in resolving the unemployment in the State.
