In a major crackdown on Motor Vehicle Act violations, the Margao traffic cell has attached around 40 motorcycles, mostly Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles, and registered around 45 cases.
While the motorcycles fitted with modified silencers have been attached and kept at the Margao police station, the police will forward the violations to the court for prosecution.
The crackdown against traffic violations comes against the backdrop of the sharp rise in road accidents, including fatalities, in the first two months of the year. The action also assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of complaints received from senior citizens over the noise pollution caused by motorcycles with modified silences.
Addressing the media, Margao Traffic Police Cell Chief, PI Gautam Salunke informed that the Traffic Police has launched a concerted drive against motorcycles with modified silencers. “These two-wheelers with the modified silencers have not only violated the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act but have been posing nuisance and pollution to the citizens, including senior citizens,” he said.
Saying the traffic police have attached around 40 motorcycles, mostly Bullet motorcycles and have registered around 45 offences in the last two days, PI Salunke said the police will prosecute all the offenders in the court.
He has sent a strong warning to all motorcycle owners to dismantle the modified silencers from the two-wheelers or face action.
“Instructions have been issued to the traffic police officials and staff drafted for duties to impound all motorcycles with modified silencers,” he said adding that the drive against the two-wheeler riders will continue.
On Tuesday, traffic police cops were found deployed near the Khareband bridge as they went about challaning two-wheeler riders without the compulsory helmet. Some of the two-wheelers were apparently heading to different destinations to partake in the carnival festivities along the coastal belt.
