The Indian Meteorological Department has confirmed the formation of a low-pressure area off the Odisha and West Bengal coasts which is expected to strengthen the rainfall activity in Goa in the days ahead.
The head of the weather forecasting department at IMD, Goa, Rahul Mohan said that the monsoon is expected to pick up speed in the coming days.
He stated that under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood, a low-pressure area has formed over Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting south-westwards with height.
He further informed that it was likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours.
“With the formation and strengthening of the low-pressure area and with the possible movement of the system, monsoon activity may continue to be normal to active over Goa in the coming days,” Mohan said.
He further informed that other weather systems like the offshore trough at mean sea level running from south Maharashtra to north Kerala and the cyclonic circulation over east-central and adjoining northeast the Arabian Sea between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level could also influence the monsoon trend in the State.
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecasted very likely heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Sunday (Aug 7) and heavy rainfall at isolated places on Monday (Aug 8).
Heavy rainfall is also predicted at a few places on Aug 9 and 10.
