After the designation of Nanda Lake at Curchorem as a Ramsar site to help in the conservation and management of wetland, the Water Resources Department has begun desilting the Xeldem Lake in Quepem.
Overgrown bushes had made it difficult for people to enter Xeldem Lake despite some beautification being done through funds allotted by the Zilla Panchayat.
The work operation got underway in the presence of PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral and ZP member Siddharth Desai.
Speaking to reporters, Cabral said the project to desilt the Xeldem lake turned into reality due to the efforts of WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar who showed a personal interest in getting the Xeldem Lake cleaned, after seeing it covered with weeds and other wild bushes.
“We need to protect the state wetlands and other lakes which were built and maintained by our ancestors. Going by the present trend, there is every possibility that water could become a scarce commodity and the government is committed to preserving all major lakes in the State,” claimed Cabral.
ZP member Siddharth Dessai also spoke on the occasion and complimented PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral and WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar for their efforts in launching the work to desilt the Xeldem Lake.
