A scrapyard located at Verna Industrial Estate caught fire on Friday evening, destroying a lot of items in the yard. The fire was so huge that a thick smoke could be seen from afar.
Sources said the incident began when wild grass was on fire and the flames spread to the scrapyard which had a huge quantity of plastic and wooden items.
The fire soon turned into an inferno and fire tenders from three locations of Verna, Vasco and Margao were dispatched to the site to control the fire.
What made matters worse was the scrapyard had no proper access for the fire tenders and the owner of the scrapyard was not to be seen nor contactable during the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Verna fire station incharge Dilip Dicholkar said fire tenders from three locations had been spraying water for over three hours continuously but the fire could not be controlled.
"This scrapyard has no access and we cannot get our fire tenders at this location. We had got a call about the fire and we have seen that the scrapyard has been densely packed with so much of material that can catch fire easily.”
“The owner of the scrapyard has gone missing and we cannot contact him to identify the goods placed in the yard. Plastic materials and other items have been gutted and now the huge stack of wooden sticks has caught fire.”
“This fire cannot be controlled until we use a JCB to separate the stack and then spray water. We cannot control the fire without manpower like labourers from the scrapyard. The owner has not taken any precautions nor is coordinating with us and fire tenders from their locations are fighting this fire for hours now," said Dicholkar.
