A man from Karwar-Karnataka has been arrested on charges of robbing two gold chains from an Israeli national in Canacona.
Noa Svotisky (38) had lodged a police complaint on January 24 stating that an unknown person had snatched two gold chains from her neck on January 22, while she was walking on the Patnem road to go to her room at a resort in Patnem-Canacona.
Canacona police registered an offence and began investigating the case.
Acting on technical analysis, CCTV footage, and other reliable information, and considering the description of the suspect and motorcycle provided by the complainant, police narrowed down their suspicion to Anand Chalavadi of Shirwad-Karwar, Karnataka.
On receiving information that the suspect was moving in the Karwar Market area on a motorcycle without registration number, a police team was deputed under the instructions of the Canacona police inspector and SDPO Canacona.
The police team led by PSI Ramdas Doifode proceeded to Karwar and apprehended the accused along with the motorcycle.
The accused, Anand Chalavadi (23) of Karwar, was brought to Canacona police station on Monday at 7 pm, where he was placed under arrest.
During interrogation on Tuesday, police recovered the two stolen gold chains worth approximately Rs 1.35 lakh. Police later arrested Atul Naik (29), also from Karwar, on charges of receiving the stolen property.
Police said Chalavadi is involved in previous criminal cases in Karnataka registered with the police stations at Yellapur, Chittakula, Karwar Rural, Karwar Town, Kumta, Hubli Bendigeri and Sub-Urban Dharwad.
The two accused have been remanded to three days in police custody. Further investigation is being carried out by Canacona PSI Ajit Velip under the guidance of the Canacona police inspector and overall supervision of the South Goa Superintendent of Police.
