Manipal Hospital performs VATS on 72-yr-old woman with cancer

PANAJI

Manipal Hospital Goa announces a groundbreaking achievement in surgical oncology with the successful completion of the Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) procedure in the Panjim region. The procedure was performed by Dr Sredharan M, Consultant Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospital Goa, and his surgical team on a 72-year-old woman.

VATS is a minimally invasive surgical technique. It utilizes a tiny camera (thoracoscope) and surgical instruments inserted through small incisions in the chest. This technique helps surgeons operate with less trauma compared to traditional open surgery.

As the patient was diagnosed with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer in her right lower lobe, Dr. Sredharan M recommended VATS as the surgical procedure to the patient’s family. Following discussions with the family, Dr. Sredharan and his team proceeded with the VATS procedure.

After completing the surgery, Dr. Sreedharan M said, “Given her condition, VATS was chosen due to its numerous benefits, including reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery. The thoracoscope provided high-definition images, allowing us to precisely remove the lobe affected by cancer.”
