The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) is set to introduce new pay parking zones and improve amenities in the market area to provide better services to the public.

MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal, along with her colleagues and engineering staff, recently conducted an inspection of various locations in the market to assess infrastructure issues that need urgent attention.

The inspection revealed several problems, including clogged drains, faulty drainage systems, and broken or uneven roads, making accessibility difficult for the public.

The civic body has identified several areas for pay parking, including the fish market area, Aram Soda Line, taxi stand, Union Pharmacy, and other key market zones.

These areas were previously notified for pay parking, and the council had already passed a resolution to implement the system.

“The pay parking zones have already been identified and notified. Last year, we prepared an estimate, and we intend to implement the system soon. However, before issuing tenders, we will carry out necessary rectifications to ensure a smooth service for the public,” said Mishal.

She added that an estimate will be drawn up to determine the cost of rectification, after which funds will be allocated for the required work. Once the proposal is approved by the council, the pay parking system will be made fully operational.

In addition, the entrance to the fish market will be declared a no-parking zone. Strict action will be taken against violators, and fines will be issued to those who park their vehicles in the restricted area.

On the issue of dug-up roads in the market, Mishal assured that the Public Works Department (PWD) would take up repair work.

The roads were initially excavated for underground power cabling and were later dug up again for the installation of new water pipelines.

The inspection was attended by MMC Vice Chairperson Sushant Harmalkar, Market Committee Chairperson Sainath Raul, Councillor Prakash Bhivshet, and Junior Engineer Dipali, among others.

The civic body aims to enhance infrastructure and streamline parking facilities to ensure better traffic management and convenience for market visitors.
