MAPUSA
The Directorate of Vigilance has launched an inquiry into allegations of substandard construction in the Rs 2.4 crore footpath project from Mapusa Court Junction to the North Goa District Hospital.
The inquiry focuses on alleged lapses in supervision by the Municipal Engineer and Junior Engineer of the Mapusa Municipal Council.
The Vigilance Department has directed its officer from the Urban Development Department to investigate the claims and take necessary action if any misconduct is uncovered.
“If any misconduct is noticed on the part of the officials, then take appropriate action as per the law and submit a detailed report to this Directorate,” said Rupa Paramasivan, Vigilance Officer-II.
The investigation follows a complaint filed by Parra resident Atmaram Gadekar, who raised concerns over the quality of the footpath and drainage system construction.
Gadekar accused the contractor of using an inadequate concrete mixture, compromising the durability and structural integrity of the project.
Gadekar claimed that the contractor used a mix of one bucket of cement, five buckets of sand, and six buckets of metal stones, which falls short of the recommended M20 grade mix of one bucket of cement, 1.5 buckets of sand, and three buckets of metal stones.
Highlighting these discrepancies, Gadekar alleged that the public funds were being misused and taxpayer money was squandered due to construction malpractices.
He called for the project to be thoroughly inspected and for substandard portions to be rectified to ensure accountability and quality in public works.
The footpath project, which aims to improve pedestrian infrastructure in Mapusa, is now under the scanner, with officials facing pressure to address the allegations and maintain transparency in public spending.
