MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has launched two mini-trucks to facilitate garbage collection in the remotest part of the town.

The two trucks were procured at a total cost of Rs 12 lakh from the municipal funds.

“The mini-trucks were required to access some hilly areas in the town for garbage collection. The large garbage lifting trucks couldn’t access the narrow roads in some areas in Khorlim so the council decided to purchase the two vehicles,” said MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari.

Although the council launched two vehicles for waste collection on Thursday, the sanitary workers (Safai Karmachari) in the civic body have been seen lifting the garbage without adequate safety gear.

Most of the sanitary workers were lifting the waste without hand gloves, masks, gumboots, etc, the basic necessities for garbage collection.

MMC boasts of near perfect door-to-door garbage collection. But despite the door-to-door exercise overflowing garbage at public places is a common sight in the town.

At a recent MMC budget meeting, the council decided to impose fine on people, who dump garbage in the municipal area from the new financial year.

The council decided to impose a fine of Rs 500 on first time offender and Rs 1,000 for a repeat offender.

The council also suggested installing CCTV cameras at various spots where people perennially dump garbage.
