For decades, the ageing Mapusa Residency has stood as a familiar landmark greeting visitors entering North Goa's commercial capital. Located next to the bustling Mapusa bus stand and municipal market, the government-run facility has long served as a convenient stopover for tourists and travellers alike.
Now, the landmark property is poised for a dramatic transformation.
The government on launched a Rs 60 crore redevelopment project that will replace the existing structure with a modern, multi-purpose tourism hub featuring hotel accommodation, commercial spaces, banquet halls, recreational facilities, a restaurant, café and basement parking.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant laid the foundation stone for the project in the presence of Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, GTDC Chairman Kedar Naik, Mapusa MLA Joshua D'Souza, Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo and senior government officials.
The redevelopment, being undertaken by the Department of Tourism and the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, is part of the State's broader strategy to modernise tourism infrastructure and enhance visitor experiences.
With the new project, the government hopes to convert the ageing property into a vibrant destination that caters not only to tourists but also to business travellers, local residents and event organisers.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said infrastructure creation remains a key focus of the government.
Referring to Mapusa's importance, the CM described the town as the commercial centre of North Goa and assured that the government would continue investing in infrastructure projects aimed at improving the town's facilities and economic prospects.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said the redevelopment reflects the government's commitment to upgrading tourism assets and creating world-class infrastructure capable of attracting greater investment and generating economic activity.
