The Marathi Rajbhasha Samiti (MRS) has criticised the government's decision to give financial assistance to Konkani programmes under the newly-formulated 'Rajbhasha Jagruti Yojana’ with Marathi being deprived under this scheme.

In a press release, MRS president G R Dhavalikar said that advisory committee at the Directorate of Official Languages had promised to give equal importance to both Marathi and Konkani.

“This was promised during the meeting in the presence of then chief minister Manohar Parrikar. But in this recent scheme, there is no place for Marathi,” stated Dhavalikar.

“We will not tolerate this government's act of sidelining Marathi, though we are struggling to get equal status on par with Konkani,” Dhavalikar added.

The Rajbhasha Jagruti Yojana scheme has been designed to provide financial support to organize language skill programmes which will support the Official Language for day-to-day use of Konkani language in the field of administration, education, culture, etc.

“If the government is sincere with the demand, it will have to make amendments in its notification by giving importance to Marathi as well,” stated Dhavalikar in the press release.
