Around 350 workers of Western India Shipyard Limited (WISL) have decided to go on a chain hunger strike at Headland Sada junction and at Panaji.
The workers who have been agitating over the non-payment of salaries for the last seven months have decided to intensify their agitation by going on a chain hunger strike at Headland Sada junction on Monday and Tuesday.
The hunger strike will later continue at Azad Maidan, Panaji, from July 20 to 25.
“We called upon the government, placed our issue before Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and later with the MPT chairman, but till date neither the government nor MPT have managed to give us any solution,” WISL Workers Union secretary Seby Pereira told The Goan.
Pereira added that they had run out of all options and the only recourse was to go on a hunger strike to get their demands settled.
“Banks are after us as we had availed loans and due to the non payment of our salaries, we have become defaulters and the banks are after us. The chain hunger strike on Monday and Tuesday at Headland Sada junction is a wake up call to the government to give us justice.”
“If the government fails to intervene then we will take the strike to the capital city and workers will continue the hunger strike from July 20 to 25.
“Despite that, if the government fails to resolve our grievances, then three of our colleagues, Alexander Pacheco, Vishnu Naik and Damodar Bhagat, will go on an indefinite hunger strike from July 26 onwards till our demands are met,” Pereira added.
