A social media post by City Jewellers, Ulhas Jewellers, recently read: “Stay tuned for a magical Christmas season as the tree that lit up Margao last year is ready to shine again.”
The city jewellers lived up to the promise as large numbers of people, young and old, gathered at the Margao Comunidade Square on Saturday evening. PWD Minister Digambar Kamat inaugurated the Christmas tree amid carol singing and festive cheer.
The tallest Christmas tree in Goa, the display will remain open to the public until January 7. Visitors can enjoy the decorations and click selfies at the spot.
Praising Ulhas Verlekar and his sons, Kamat said Ulhas Jewellers had introduced a unique Christmas tree concept at the square last year. “This year, they have improved it and made it even more attractive. They deserve praise for this effort,” he said.
Kamat added that the people of Margao welcome activities that add value to the city. He said such events should be supported and more business owners should come forward to organise programmes at different places. “This is the second year they have set up the Christmas tree here,” he said. “They understand the importance of giving back to Margao, and I am sure they will continue in the coming years.”
Explaining the idea behind the project, Vikram Verlekar said Ulhas Jewellers wanted to bring an international-style Christmas feel to the city. “This is the second year of Christmas Magic. This year, it cost us about Rs 5 lakh, which is slightly less than last year as we reused the same tree structure,” he said.
