A former trustee of the Jamat Ul Muslimin Madina Masjid, Vasco, has been accused of misappropriating more than Rs 3 lakh belonging to the religious institution by allegedly diverting fixed deposit funds for personal use.
According to a complaint filed by Abdul Khan, trustee of the Madina Masjid Trust, Vasco, the alleged offence took place between November 2017 and December 2017 at Vasco.
The accused, identified as Shaikh Moosa Hussain alias Maksood Shaik, a resident of Baina, Vasco, was serving as a trustee and treasurer of the Jamat Ul Muslimin Madina Masjid from 1994 till February 2019 and was entrusted with the custody of the masjid’s financial assets during the relevant period.
The complaint states that the accused was the custodian of a fixed deposit amounting to Rs 2,97,000 held in a bank in the name of the Jamat Ul Muslimin Madina Masjid. It is alleged that Shaikh Moosa Hussain fraudulently transferred the fixed deposit into a current account of the Madina Masjid, which was opened by him.
Police said the accused was the authorised signatory to the said account and subsequently withdrew a total amount of Rs 3,09,381, including interest accrued on the fixed deposit. The complainant alleged that the entire amount was utilised by the accused for his personal use, resulting in misappropriation of masjid funds.
Based on the complaint, Vasco police have registered a case against the accused.
Further investigation into the case is being carried out by PSI Prisly Carvalho of Vasco police station under the supervision of PI Vaibhav Naik and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
