PANAJI
Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Surendra Furtado has accused the State Government of by-passing the CCP while implementing various projects under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
In his letter to the Chief Secretary on June 21, he has stated that as per the Indian Constitution, the State Government has to implement any scheme for the development of the City in consultation with the elected representatives of the Urban Local Bodies (ULB).
“However, it is observed by the Corporation that the Government of Goa, which is headed by an elected representative, is implementing the AMRUT Mission scheme by bypassing the elected representatives of the ULB, ie the CCP”, reads the letter.
Addressing a press conference at CCP, Furtado said, “State government is trying to weaken this panel who is ruling the CCP, especially Surendra Furtado, who is the mayor. I don’t know why they are so paranoid when I sit here. Why they get sleepless nights. I love the city and want to do something. But somewhere down the line, somebody is pulling the brakes. People of Panaji should ask who is depriving the CCP of its rights. With regard to implementation of AMRUT, the government tried to bypass CCP. No resolution was taken by the CCP, neither by the standing committee nor during the corporation meeting.”
He alleged that the Urban Secretary, Chief Secretary, Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation and CCP Commissioner side lined the CCP and got the projects approved from the Centre.
