The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast on Friday expected an increase in rainfall activity in the State for the next three days due to formation of a low pressure area over North-East Bay of Bengal.
The low pressure system is likely to intensify in the next couple of days, IMD said.
“Very heavy rainfall (rainfall exceeding 11.5 cm in 24 hours) is very likely at three or four places in the State and extremely heavy rainfall (rainfall exceeding 20.5 cm in 24 hours) is expected at one or two places from Sept 19 to 21,” said Rahul Mohan, a senior scientist at the IMD.
The IMD further said that wind speed is likely to be in the range of 30 to 40 kmph over North and South Goa districts during the same period.
According to the weather office, the weather systems which are likely to strengthen rainfall activity in Goa is due to formation of a low pressure area over North-East Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood, a cyclonic circulation over West-Central Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts at 1.5 km above mean sea level and an East-West shear zone roughly along latitude 16°N between 3.1 and 5.8 km above mean sea level.
The weather report has also said squally weather with wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph is likely to prevail over South Maharashtra-Goa coast from on September 19 to 22.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea along and off the coast during the period.
The total rainfall recorded so far in the State since June 1 is 375.11 cm which is 31 percent higher than normal.
