MARGAO
Even as Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has gone in fast mode to put Sonsodo back on track, a mini-Sonsodo is in the making right in the heart of the commercial capital, just metres away from the municipal building.
Social activist Sriram Raitukar showed the media how the area adjoining his residence at Pajifond is converted into a waste dump yard. He said unscrupulous people have been dumping waste at the site, causing a nuisance as well as a health hazard to the neighbouring residents.
Raiturcar pointed out that the entire locality was hit by chikungunya and dengue last year, affecting as many as 50 residents.
“We request the Margao municipality to step in immediately and clear the mess from the public space before the area becomes a breeding ground for vector-borne diseases,” he said.
Another resident wondered why the MMC has failed to take note of the pathetic state of the area when senior officials and engineers are making umpteen trips to Sonsodo with the issue coming under the Court scanner.
“If the MMC only acts if the matter reaches the Court, we would like to know from the City Father and Municipal Babus whether they expect the residents to knock on the doors of the High Court to resolve the garbage problem,” the resident asserted.
