Miscreants set waste mound afire at SGPDA retail market

MARGAO

A day after The Goan carried a story about how the SGPDA retail market plays host to waste mounds, exposing the sorry state of affairs, unknown miscreants set the garbage afire on Wednesday afternoon.

Margao fire brigade rushed to the PDA retail market around 2 pm following a call that a tree in the market is engulfed by fire. When the fire brigade reached the market, they came across the waste mound set afire by unknown miscreants, which later spread to a tree.

Margao Fire Officer Gill D’Souza informed that the waste mound has been set afire by miscreants at the PDA retail market.

“How come the waste mound suddenly caught fire unless someone has set fire to dispose of the waste,” Gill questioned, while virtually conceding that the fire is a clear case of arson.

As the firemen battled for over half an hour to bring the fire under control, thick black smoke billowed out from the market complex, polluting the environment and posing a health hazard to the residents.

Incidentally, the waste has been disposed of by burning just a day after The Goan had highlighted how the SGDPA retail market is playing host to waste mounds. The story pointed out the sorry state of affairs with two waste mounds raising their ugly heads, one near the fishing cutting shed and the other right opposite the chicken stalls.

The waste mound has raised its ugly head in the market as the Margao Municipal Council is believed to have told the SGDPA to hand over segregated waste to the civic waste collectors.

The SGPDA has come under the scanner of the District Collector Jyoti Kumari after an inspection of the water nullahs discharging sewage water into river Sal revealed that the SGPDA retail market plays host to waste mounds.
