A councillor of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) was allegedly attacked by an unidentified group at Zuarinagar Birla late Tuesday night.
According to sources, Councillor Dhanpal Swamy was attacked by a group of people over an issue of parking of his car along the road in front of a stall at Zuarinagar. Swamy reported the matter to Verna Police on Thursday morning.
Speaking to the media, Swamy said he was returning home in his car after attending a reception at Verna.
“I stopped at a kiosk to buy water bottle at about 10.30 pm. I had parked my car and suddenly two persons came and told me to remove the car. They kept saying ‘you do not know us and we will beat you up’. I requested them for two minutes and sat in my car to move away, but the duo started to forcibly open my driver’s seat door,” said Swamy.
“Later, five more people appeared and began pushing me and tore my shirt. I lost my mobile phone in the incident. “I told them I wasn’t wanting to fight or get involved in any argument. I also told them that I was a municipal councillor and I had only stopped to buy a water bottle. They probably had planned to attack me for no reason,” added Swamy.
Swamy said the certain area of Zuarinagar was known for anti-social elements. “Such things have to be stopped immediately. I will go to the
chief minister but not let this go by. If a decent councillor can be attacked in the open, then how safe are the residents of this area,” questioned Swamy.
