At a special meeting, councillor Saifullah Khan said the council cannot take up developmental works in the wards due to lack of funds. He suggested that instead of allowing the government to collect octroi from oil companies, MMC should collect it and use the money for developmental works instead of depending on government grants. Supporting the suggestion made by Khan, other councillors said they have been forced to seek government funds even for small developmental works and in most cases these are never granted.
Chairperson Deepak Naik then proposed a resolution stating that the council should collect octroi, instead of the government, and it was adopted unanimously in the council.
MMC also resolved not to allow advertisement signboards on electricity poles in the city. Participating in the debate, Councillor Fredrick Henriques said the advertisers make huge money by way of advertisements, while the council is paid a minuscule amount. “Advertising boards also pose a threat to vehicles,” he added.
With regard to collection of arrears, Naik said the council will conduct a drive to collect the same forming teams. The council hall will be used to collect arrears, where tables will be put up and different teams will be allowed to collect outstanding licenses fees, advertisement tax and house tax.
