MARGAO
In an interesting development, the Sewerage Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL) has entrusted to the Margao Municipal Council the task of identifying the drains polluting the river Sal and to put in place arrangements to block the drains in Khareband and Sirvodem areas and divert the same to the sewerage system.
This was communicated by SIDCGL general management to the Chief Officer to Margao Municipal Council to take the necessary measures pointing out that during the inspection of river Sal near Khareband nallah on November 19, the Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas had expressed his desire to block the waste water flowing in in a number of drains from entering the River Sal and divert them to the nearby sewerage system so as to stop pollution of river Sal.
That’s not all. The SIDCGL has told the civic body not just to block the drains carrying sewage water into the river Sal, but to divert the same to the sewerage system after screening so as to send it to the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) after obtaining necessary permission from the Sewerage department.
In the meantime, the Corporation has told the civic body to ask the residents of all the areas to avail sewerage connections wherever sewer network exists in the area.
This is perhaps the first time that the SIDCGL has called upon the Margao Civic body to stop the flow of raw sewage and waste water flows into the drains, before finding its way into the river Sal.
