Condemning the Mormugao Municipal Council’s (MMC) decision to identify 25 institution and label them under bulk waste generators, the Niz Goenkar Revolution Front (NGRF) on Friday said the council had become incompetent in tackling garbage issues on its own.
NGRF Spokesperson Chandrashekar Vasta said the MMC has resorted to a new suggestion of identifying big generators of waste and insisting that garbage created by such institutions be disposed by the institution itself.
“It was the MMC who had gone all out to issue licenses to various vendors and now, it has done a U-turn insisting that some hotels and Chicken centres that were issued license by MMC be declared as bulk waste generators.”
“The MMC has come up with this novel idea of ensuring that bulk waste generators tackle garbage on their own, then what is the point in charging them garbage fees?”
Vasta claimed there is no garbage disposal happening at Sada and the waste treatment plant is not functioning.
“The garbage heap at Sada is rising by the day and fed up with the non-functional garbage treatment plant, MMC has now come up with this plan to hide its incapability to tackle garbage.”
“If the MMC cannot handle garbage, then why are they issuing so many licences and why are they charging other dues like house tax and garbage fees? MMC should be responsible for tackling the garbage issue and it is their primary duty.”
“This shows that MMC is totally incompetent and they should have repaired the waste treatment plant instead of troubling vendors to hide their incompetence,” said Vasta.
