The Sub Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Management, South Goa of the district Consumer Protection Council has called for a quarterly analysis report on the number of accidents taking place on Goan roads, the lessons learnt from these accidents and the action taken by the authorities.
The Committee has also decided to recommend to the district Collectors to set up a yard at the Industrial estates to dump all accident vehicles instead of parking them at the police stations and at open spaces. After the meeting held at the South Goa district police headquarters, activist Roland Martins told the media that an analysis of the accidents is the need of the hour to find out the causes behind the accidents.
“We have reports that majority of the deaths in road accidents were two-wheeler riders. Non wearing of helmets is one thing, but the authorities should also find out the causes, including whether the accident has taken place because of faulty road engineering, lack of illumination etc”, he added.
He said the sub committee of road safety and traffic management will also vigorously take up the compliance of the excise office directive to the bars and restaurants to install the ‘Don’t Drink and Dive’ signage outside the establishments.
The meeting, which was held to mark the UN global road safety week on the theme leadership on road safety, also decided to involve the leaders at the Municipality and Panchayat level to participate in road safety programs.
“We are saying the time has come for the people, including the leaders, Sarpanchas, Municipal Chairpersons, Panchas, Councilors, Zilla Panchayat members and other elected representatives to participate and speak on road safety,” he said.
He pointed out that the Committee will take up with the panchayat and Municipal bodies the question of constituent Road Safety Traffic Management Committees in the next three months.
