MMC knocks on GWMC doors to temporarily shift dry waste from Margao to Saligao plant

 MARGAO

With the Friday fire destroying the baling machines and the power logistics at Sonsodo, the Margao Municipal Council has knocked the doors of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) with a plea to temporarily shift the dry waste from the commercial capital to the GWMC’s plant at Saligao.

In this respect, the civic body has dashed off another letter to the Goa State Pollution Control Board, seeking NOC to transport dry waste, approximately 10 tonnes, on daily basis from the Margao Municipal Council, Margao to Goa Waste Management Corporation, Saligao.

In separate letters to the Member Secretaries of GWMC and GSPCB, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes drew their attention to Friday's incident wherein the High Tension line of the Electricity Department at 1 pm got snapped and created a major fire due to a short circuit at Sonsodo (garbage) MSW site.

He pointed out that due to the fire accident, the council cannot carry out bailing of dry waste at Sonsodo Treatment Plant as the bailing machines and the electric transformer have been damaged due to the blaze.

“This council temporarily would like to send 10 tonnes of dry waste on a daily basis to Goa Waste Management Corporation for 60 days”, he said.

The MMC chief officer further pointed out that the council has requested the Member Secretary of Goa State Pollution Control Board to grant a No Objection Certificate to temporarily shift dry 10 tonnes of dry waste on a daily basis to Goa Waste Management Corporation.

Meanwhile, the chief officer told the media that preliminary reports indicate that Friday’s fire incident has destroyed property worth over Rs 40 lakh.

“The transformer and other electrical equipment, besides a baling machine has been left damaged in the incident. Due to the destruction, baling of dry waste has been affected. It will take over a month to restore the power supply at Sonsodo”, he added.
